Everyone wants to find their dream employee, someone who works hard, exudes positive energy, and brings great ideas to the table.
So what can you do to attract and retain top talent?
In no particular order…
Attracting top talent starts with building a business that people want to be part of. Although you may not be able to offer amazing perks yet, focus on your tight-knit culture with high growth potential. Be sure to showcase what makes your company a great place to work for, whether it’s an extremely collaborative environment or that they have the potential to grow quickly.
Is your company’s website accessible, fun, and easy to navigate? Does it give people a general idea of what it would be like to work there. Many small businesses have sections describing their team members and extra curricular activities – it’s always nice for candidates to see who they would be working with.
Especially in technical fields – a paid internship, say over the summer, can give you a better picture of how someone fits into your team. Most of the time you’ll never know until they’re actually in the trenches, so to speak, and has to perform.
By doing what you say you’re going to do, you can encourage trust in candidates and often times, blow your competition out of the water, especially when it comes to the time you offer.
Remember to offer your candidate a glass of water (or perhaps even a coffee) when they arrive for interview. At the end of the interview, remember to see them to the lift or to the door personally. And if they didn’t make it send a personal note (with meaningful feedback) to every person or if you’re comfortable pick up the phone after the interview.
